As of June 4, 2025, Vodafone Idea (Vi) is actively seeking a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) as the current CEO, Akshaya Moondra, approaches the end of his three-year term in August 2025 . Moondra, who took over in August 2022, has been instrumental in navigating the company through significant financial challenges, including managing substantial debt and overseeing a ₹25,000 crore rights issue in 2019 aimed at reducing the company's debt and strengthening its financial position .
The search for a new CEO is part of Vi's broader strategy to stabilize its operations and improve its market position amidst intense competition from rivals like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel . The company is considering candidates from sectors such as consumer goods and technology, emphasizing the importance of a strong understanding of distribution networks .
In addition to leadership changes, Vi is actively engaged in discussions with the Indian government regarding relief on its Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues, which are crucial for its sustainability beyond the fiscal year 2025–26 (FY26) . The company has warned that without immediate government support or relief on its AGR dues, it may not be able to continue operations beyond FY26 .
While the government has increased its stake in Vi to approximately 48.99% by converting ₹36,950 crore worth of additional dues into equity, it has clarified that no further equity conversions will be offered, and the future financial health and operational stability of Vi are now entirely the company’s responsibility .
The situation remains fluid, and Vi's ability to continue operations hinges on securing necessary financial support and restructuring its liabilities.
